by Marion Jones

The bleak winter is getting to you and you’re mooching around trying to decide what to do with yourself. You’re snowbound and the only thing that you can think of doing is sitting in front of your fire, drinking hot chocolate and staring broodingly out of the window. The only thing with that is that you’ve already been doing just that for days now and you’ve have had enough of fires, hot chocolate and mooching.

Now you’re ready to do something different. So, you turn to the only solace you have and switch on the TV. You’re instantly enthralled as you come across one of those many shows about how you can do up your home. You find yourself inundated with decorating ideas: interior decor and exterior decor, you name it and they’ll have it on the TV.

So, you finally find yourself entranced by something that you would have dismissed earlier and jump out of your seat to get a pencil and notebook to note down all those great ideas. Before long, you’ve run out of room in your notebook and have to leave your comfortable chair to go get another one.

Before you get back to your chair, you’ve made a tour around the house and have seen many of the things that you’ve spent a lifetime trying to avoid – the cracks in the bedroom wall, the faint spot of mildew in the bathroom, the paint chipping off many of the walls.

The list is endless and could go on for many pages. So you dutifully sit down, and alongside your notes on various decorating ideas on interior design and general refurbishing, you meticulously note down all the little things that need fixing, replacing or refitting.

The list naturally spans more than even your second notebook can hold but you decide to stop there, because it’s more than your arm can take to continue writing, besides you already have all the relevant facts at your fingertips, so now you set about sorting them out into directions that you can easily follow.

Not an easy job that, when your decorating ideas, interior designs and room-by-room list of snags is all mixed up in one messy pile. You then turn to the tried and tested, age-old method of sitting on the floor and surrounding yourself with your notes in an attempt at finding some logical order you can follow later.

When you finally reach that sublime state of orderliness, you sit back with a tired but satisfied smile on your face. The knowledge that you’ll now have enough decorating ideas and interior design plans and less time on your hands during those long hard months of winter, sends a gush of contentment flowing through you. There’s nothing like a job well done and the foreknowledge that come springtime, your home is going to look nothing like its former self.

Australian Homeowners will receive $1600 Free from the Federal Governments latest stimulus package. The stimulus package designed to reduce greenhouse gases and save homeowners money on energy bills. This is completely free to homeowners that don’t have current insulation.

The Federal Governments $4 billion economic stimulus plan is giving Australian Homeowners $1600 Free. The insulation rebate is available from 1st July 2009 for a limited time. For homeowners, the insulation rebate is up to $1600 worth of ceiling insulation and $1000 for tenants and landlords. The insulation rebate will cover up to 2.9 million Australian Homes.

Free Insulation- The Savings will be in your pocket

Insulation rebate will save you money in more ways than One, first, unlike many other rebates where the purchaser is required to pay for the product and then apply for a rebate payment back from the government, the insulation rebate is paid directly to the installer after completing the work. Meaning the homeowner has to pay nothing. It is completely Free.

This means the homeowner does not have to pay for anything – no out of pocket expenses at all! Second, the installation rebate of up to $1600 per household in most cases covers the entire cost of the job, with the average home costing between $1200 to $1600 to supply and fit with ceiling insulation.

Third, the purpose of the insulation rebate is to increase energy efficiency in Australian homes – this improved efficiency will mean that you will save money on your energy bills. For your Insulation

Protect the Environment and reduce Greenhouse

Up to 35% of heat in a house can be lost through the roof, but with up to 2.9 million homes improving their energy efficiency thanks to the insulation rebate, the huge reduction in energy consumption by Australians will result in a significant dropping the emission of the greenhouses gases.

Insulation Rebate: Cost YOU NOTHING

The insulation rebate covers each eligible home for up to $1600 worth of FREE ceiling insulation; with the average home costing $1200 this means absolutely NO OUTLAY to you. The ceiling insulation must be installed by qualified and registered installer to be eligible for the insulation rebate. The installer will supply you with a written quote and complete the job and handle the paperwork. The installer will then receive the insulation rebate directly from the government.

Taking up the insulation rebate offer is simple: Fill in the form below to take advantage of the INSULATION REBATE: IT COST YOU NOTHING

With the arrival of the age of economic living, it seems to be getting more and more important to lower your carbon emissions and fuel usage, so what ways are there to achieve that?

by Mary Barbara Dickins

With the arrival of the age of economic living, it seems to be getting more and more important to lower your carbon emissions and fuel usage, so what ways are there to achieve that?

In the last five or so years there have been massive developments in the energy efficiency if boilers and home insulation. It makes financial and economical sense to keep as much energy conserved as possible, rather than let it leak out through the roof, windows and walls.

During the winter months, heating a house can be an expensive business. In order to save on heating costs, you should firstly ensure that your loft in properly insulated to prevent loosing heat energy through the ceiling. A good second step to take is to have thermostats installed in each room, allowing you to control the temperature of the rooms in your home individually, rather than simply heating the whole house. Youd be surprised at how much this can take off your heating bill.

If your boiler is over 5 or 6 years old it is unlikely that it will be the latest specification and so will not be as energy efficient as it could be. Huge strides have been made in this area recently so it is well worth considering an upgrade in order to reduce your fuel consumption.

There are different types of boilers, combination boilers which heat water on demand and conventional which heat water to an insulated cylinder. For smaller house holds, it is well worth using a combination boiler as you will only be heating the water that you need, but for larger homes with more occupants you will more than likely want to use a conventional boiler and storage cylinder where your water will normally be heated overnight via Economy 7 or via your boiler.

Which ever type of boiler suits your circumstances, make sure that you purchase the most energy efficient one that you can as over a 10 year period the potential savings will be massive. It is also worth noting that lowering the temperature on your thermostat by just 1 degree will result in big savings across a year. It is also unlikely that you will notice a 1 degree drop in the indoor temperature.

In conjunction with low energy light bulbs, draft excluders, double glazing and cavity wall insulation you will be able to keep your energy consumption to a minimum. You can also buy energy meters which show you just how much energy your house is currently using, by monitoring your use for a few weeks you will quickly be able to reduce your household consumption even further.

by Trubad Hasann

Spiders are something, which can terrify a person, when it enters into a home. There are many types of spiders that you can find on the earth; some of which are harmful while others help in keeping away the pest away from your home. It is not a difficult task to control the spider and get rid of them. However, you should adopt a safety method for spider pest control so that it has no effect in the environment and your family.

If you are ready to spend an amount is controlling, then you can hire a professional for spider pest control. You have even other effective methods, which can help you in controlling the spiders. One method, which you can use to get rid of spider, is to use a glue to attract the spiders towards it. Many become unsuccessful with this method, as they do not know what really attracts the insects. Spider trap products are available in the market, which is also a better option to get rid of the spiders. This product uses a glue having aromas, which are liked by the spider and they fall into a trap. This glue traps are not so big, as it is very easy to install this behind the furniture and behind your closet.

Do not fear when purchasing this glue trap from the market, as it is one of the natural way of getting rid from any spiders without and side effect. As it a chemical free, no pesticide, no poison repellent and therapy, it will not harm the surroundings and even the pets at your home.

Other methods of controlling Spider Pest would be to use the concept of cleanliness; a clean house will always be free from maximum types of unwanted pests. We should dust our homes on a daily basis, as well as sweep and clean each corner of a house at least once in a few days. To prevent entry of spiders, we should discard all the filthy, dirty bags, or clothing, which is of no use to us. More dirt particles would invite more pests of all shapes and sizes. We should not let still water bodies exist near or in our surroundings, if we don’t want spiders in our home.

Tobacco can also be used to deter spiders from your home. Put some tobacco in boiling water and allow it to fully soak in the water. After this, then take out the tobacco and keep that pungent water in a clean container. To this water add some lemon dish soap and after mixing it well spray this solution at the periphery of your home. This solution is surely not to be liked by the spiders.

You will find that pets play an important role in the detachment of spiders from your house. You will also find that eucalyptus trees plays in spider pest control, as the trees contain a strong order, which helps your home to be free from spider as the order of these plants proves to be very effective, stopping spider to come inside you house.

Now, we can see some of the natural spider repellant substances, which can be used for spider pest control. Chestnut is wonderful repellant of spiders. Similarly if we mix Peppermint and Lavender, brew it with pennyroyal/some orange oil and use it as a spray, then it will serve as an excellent spider repellant. Ultrasonic insect repellant can also be used in this regard.

You can control the spider once it has entered in your home, but try and keep your home clean. Again, dusting is very essential and this all will ban the spider entrance only, as this is one of the best spider pest control methods. There are various other ways, which can help the stoppage of spider in your home. They include the application of solution of ammonia on your windows, which helps spiders to stay out from your house. So, you should use the above mentioned methods, if you wish to get your home free from these pests and make it comfortable to live in.

Well, to start with, the number of interior design colleges that you will come across in your search will be great and, at times, even confusing. If you do a search on the Internet or just ring up the colleges and ask for a course catalogue you can then make an informed decision about which of the interior design colleges you choose to go to.

If your life is too busy at the moment but you still want to fit in a course or two, you always have the option of studying at any of the Internet interior design colleges that seem to abound these days. Or perhaps you could even try a night course or correspondence course in your pursuit of interior design knowledge.

All of the interior design colleges teach basically the same things and will help you develop your own natural abilities. You’ll learn everything from scratch and will be given an understanding into why certain colours go well next to each other and why other clash.

You’ll learn when to apply the rules that you’re given and when you can break them. But above all, you’ll learn how to use your natural design abilities with the knowledge that you’ve garnered at the college and blend it into a mix that is greatly pleasing to the eye.

Moreover, if interior design colleges are what you’re interested in, then you can be assured of finishing with a lot more than only the knowledge of how to place which colour next to another colour to get a pleasing effect. By taking at least a few courses, or even by doing the whole range of courses offered to you, you’ll be multiplying your natural interior designing abilities at least a hundred fold.

There’s nothing like having a confidence boost to stave up your own innate skills and to be able to tell someone with total confidence that you are a bona fide interior designer.

by Tom Sanderrs

Do you ever realize that it is possible your home might not be selling because of the light fixtures you have? In many cases the difference of getting an offer or having potential buyers pass by on your home can simply depend on changing the light fixtures.

It might sound too easy of a solution, but if your home has been on the market for a long period of time then you have to consider that it does look dated. Many things can create that dated appearance, such as colors of the paint, decor, kitchen and bathroom fixtures, as well as countertop materials, appliances and naturally the light fixtures. Whereas some of these items are easily and inexpensively replaced, others will cost a lot of money. Replacing old light fixtures with modern ones will make a world of difference and is also one of the easiest and cheapest ways to bring your home up to date.

Now we can take a closer look at why light fixtures can keep your house from selling faster than it is and what you can do to solve this problem in just a few short hours.

In the past there was not as much in the way of light fixtures available and that is obvious since almost every older home seems to have the same kinds of lights. Just take a look around and you will most likely notice that you too have those simple round ceiling mounted lights or those square plates with the bulbs on the underside.

If you look in the bathroom, you’re likely to find a strip of light bulbs on a horizontal piece of wood just over the mirror or medicine cabinet and/or a brass looking sconce on either side of the mirror or medicine cabinet that has seen much better days.

The fixtures in the hall have the same problem. The plain overhead light that is in no way capable of properly lighting up the hallway. In the kitchen and dining room there is the same problem, but this time with the formerly standard ceiling fan fixture with the light and tons of dust. It is no wonder that potential home buyers aren’t impressed by this and notice it immediately.

You also need to assess the style of your home as it is now. It is likely that the style of your decor and the light fixtures don’t match each other. This is commonly overlooked because you become accustomed to your light fixtures and just don’t realize that the styles are no longer compatible. This is obvious for a home buyer, though.

It is a good idea to look through some home and garden magazines that have articles about homes that are similar in style to the one you are selling. You can then compare the fixtures pictured in the home featured in the magazine to the ones you actually have. You will most likely realize that the differences are obvious and that the old fixtures need to be replaced right away.

Visit your local home store or look online to see all the different styles of lighting and light fixtures available today. The choices are almost overwhelming! From beautiful pendant lights to monorail and track railing systems, wall sconces, and gorgeous chandeliers, you’ll find the perfect lighting solution that fits the style of your home-and enhances its potential. And when you invest in new light fixtures and take a day to install them (or hire a professional), your home buyers will look at your home “in a whole new light!

Your bathroom does not just need to be a place to shave and bathe. You can add excitement to this room and make it a fun place to be. Gone are the days when bathrooms were just equipped with a bright ceiling light and maybe a task light over the mirror. Now there are all sorts of different lighting fixtures available to dress up your bathroom.

Good task lighting is a must for your bathroom. Your first area of concern will be vanity lighting. It is a big mistake to put ceiling illumination above the mirror, as it will give rise to shadows. A better idea is to put vertical lights on both sides of the mirror. They should be bright. Decorative lamps and LED light bars are a good choice. You can also put overhead lighting right over the mirror. This illumination should be 24″ long and 80″ from the floor.

Recessed lighting is good to light up your shower. Plastic covers will discolor so always use glass. The fixture can be angled to draw attention to decorative shower tiles. Illumination over the toilet can also be done.

Different colors can be used for accent and ambient lighting; this will add drama to your bathroom. A relaxing mood can be created in this way. An example of a relaxing color is blue. For a more intimate atmosphere pink or yellow can be used.

If you have a spar or Jacuzzi tub you can have fun with underwater lighting and different colors. The illumination will reflect through the water and add to your spar enjoyment. You can experiment with blue and red hues or even have changing colors.

The latest trend is to go Japanese and dress up your bathroom in an oriental style. You can create a mysterious Far Eastern look by putting lights behind paper panels. This will create a soft mellow light in the bathroom. This type of lighting is very soothing.

A Japanese look can also be obtained by a hanging lamp. To give a soft illumination effect you can use a white paper shade. You can use a shoji lamp; this is covered with rice paper and made of wood. Make your bathroom unique and authentic looking by putting one of these lamps in one corner.

There are numerous ways to add excitement to your bathroom. There are now many more options than plain ceiling lights and a few task lights. With a little thought and imagination you can transform your bathroom into a fun and wonderful place. Why not make your bathroom fun, as you will be spending the beginning and end of the day here.

by Tom Sanderrs

Lamps are useful task lighting and are excellent for enhancing ambient illumination. However they can also be used for decorative lighting and can transform a room. There are many different styles of lamps.

You can use a Tiffany lamp, which is made up of multiple pieces of stained glass, to add class and personality to a room. Their uniqueness will set the mood for a room. A table, or floor Tiffany lamp can be used in different situations and places.

Oriental lamps have a special style which is very unique. They are often made of wood and have paper shades. Again these can be used as decorative lamps to add a nice accent to a room. The can also be used as part of an oriental theme for a room.

Office lamps are used for work. They have a bright direct light with a simple design. These lamps are good for office or a computer area. For more detailed work angle lamps are useful.

Floor lamps are good for reading and can be placed in corners of a room near your sofas or chairs in your living room. They come in many styles and add a decorative touch to a room. You can use a contemporary style for modern rooms or a tiffany style for a more traditional look.

Torch lights will give you a soft light, reflected from the ceiling because they point upward. Existing ambient lighting is enhanced by this type of lighting and it will give a warm atmosphere to the room. These lighting fixtures can be utilized for the sitting room or bedroom. Different colored bulbs can be used. The romantic mood can be deepened by a yellow light.

The size of a lamp will be judged by what purpose you are using it for and where you are putting it. An example of this would be a table lamp that would need to fit on a table or desk. It will need to be compact so that it does not overcrowd the table but on the other hand it will need to be bright enough to work by. The shade of a bedside lamp should not be too big or it will cause the lamp to be toppled easily.

Another consideration is the weight of the lamp. If it is heavier it will not fall over as easily. This type of lamp might be a better selection if you are encountering heavy traffic or have young children. In quieter areas you can utilize a fancy lighter lamp.

Choosing the style of lamp is important. You will need to decide whether the lamp should be traditional or contemporary. This will be determined by the style of your room and the furniture it has. There are many stylish contemporary floor and torch lamps that will set off a room and give it the modern look and feel that you want.
