As we learn more about wind power and its ability to generate clean renewable energy, we are also discovering that all we have to do is go to our history books to find these original ideas. Energy was needed for water in remote areas and turning crops into grain.

The Egyptians used vertical wind power to grind their wheat 3,000 years ago and now some companies are toying with the idea of vertical wind mills on a small scale basis for residential use. They are especially effective where the wind shifts directions or where a stead wind flow is not reliable.

A three kilowatt version is powerful enough to generate enough power for one household without the noise, extreme height or large amount of land needed as that of the horizontal units. Further, environmentalists will be happy to hear that there is no danger of birds and bats being drawn into a vertical turbine because of the unique design and rotation.

People who like artistic designs would love these models since they are designed so beautifully. These days, one of these models is becoming quite popular in a lot of parts in the UK. The charging points of these vertical towers are being set up by Mercedes Benz in collaboration with the manufacturers. The power generated by these will hopefully suffice for a per year driving of 30,000 miles for the new electric care product of Mercedes Benz, Smart fortwo.

A 500 watt unit is also installed in the garage of Jay Leno along with a bigger 10kw model in his garage which measures about 17,000 square feet. Though, these days the preliminary investment and installation charges are astronomical ($20,000), slowly as the demand for these units will increase, most residential owners will be able to afford these units. Many of Jay Leno’s practically applied ideas can be found at the Popular Mechanics website.

Apart from the residential complexes, hotels are also using this vertical turbine on their rooftops across the world from New Zealand to London. In a recent event, independently tested model in Utah was unveiled at Washington in US Botanical Garden and received a lot of critical acclaim. Most of these units are smaller than six feet and are being hailed for a myriad of possibilities that they have opened up.

There is also a different kind of vertical windmill which uses the principles of sailing engineering. Solar cells cover the turbine vanes which helps in generating a combination of solar and wind power. If you want something which can help you to harness the wind or solar energy but is not heavy or bulky, this could be a great option for you. A lot of awarded and patented inventions are being marketed in the past years and new inventions are being created.

As we discover more and more about our history of energy, options available and the realism that this will work, you can’t help but get excited about all of the new technology today in renewable energy. Join a few websites on green energy and stay abreast on the latest inventions. Germany is a leader in promoting wind energy and many international sites are available as well. Don’t settle for what you feel is unrealistic in alternative energy when there are so many choices coming on the market.

Any type of system for renewable electricity that can utilize without depending on the utility grid is a stand-alone-off-grid system.

by Dale Green

Any type of system for renewable electricity that can utilize without depending on the utility grid is a stand-alone-off-grid system. Before you move off-grid, consider some things regarding the system first so you would be able to determine if the decision is right.

When you take that final step and set up a stand-alone off-grid system, you are firing your utility company and taking on this responsibility yourself. There will be no service truck coming out in the middle of the night if you suddenly lose power or pinpoint a problem from a power surge. You may very well find yourself respecting that money hungry utility company that you had learned to hate over the years.

You might be thinking that by setting up an off-grid system for electrical supply you can save money or lessen utility bills. This may not happen because the process of generating your own power would mean you will spend more money for the essential tools and machine. The battery, the engine generator, and the operating costs are all very expensive.

The battery usually costs thousands of dollars and will only last for about fifteen years in operation. Since the energy comes from the sun, there will be ore energy to store in a day that may overcharge the batteries if batteries are not large enough. To avoid this, you will need charge regulators for the battery. What will happen to the stored energy that has not been used? Moving to off-grid system will require you to move your schedules as well to be able to catch up with the peak times of the supply. All these considerations and expenses do not correspond to your goal of saving money.

Depending on renewable energy doesn’t always go as planned if you are counting on the sun or the wind. You will need a backup generator that runs on petroleum and is very noisy and smelly. Many times you will not have enough power to operate certain appliances because the power is not ‘on-demand’ when you need it.

Aside from the expenses and the limitations of the system, you also have to consider the maintenance and labor to be applied in going off-grid. Your independence will require you to gain knowledge about the mechanics of the system in case some problems arise. Instead of hiring someone to do the necessary maintenance for your system, you will save more if you know how to do it yourself.

Totally freeing yourself from a governing body like the utility company is not impossible to do but you have to look at your options and wonder if making this dramatic move is really in your best interest. Staying tied to your current grid and getting used to your new renewable energy system might work out better in the beginning. You would have something to fall back on while learning the ropes and getting familiar with something totally foreign to you.

The grid-tie system is enough for those who are new to using renewable energy. This is utilized by setting up an inverter that connects the utility grid to the main switch of the house. There is no battery needed and the excess energy will go back to the grid. When you are ready to move from grid-tied to off-grid system, perhaps the costs of the batteries and the whole set up is lesser by that time.

Are you wanting to get away from the hectic life and live off the grid? Are you tired of your high electric bills? It used to be that only the rough rugged survivalist used to choose to live this way. But today many more people are deciding to get off the grid so that they can for one thing save money on their electric bills. The other main reason to choose to live off the grid though, is that they have found a piece of property, that is too far from the grid to be hooked up to.

If you’re building a new home on your property, then you should decide on what sort of power you want to use in your home before construction begins. Since you’re moving here to live off the grid, you should make your energy source part of your home from the ground up.

If you want to use solar energy, then the important thing is that your property will get enough direct sunlight to generate the power you need. You’ll get the best results from your solar power system by installing it to face south. Before you install this system, you’ll also want to know how much power you’ll need to generate to supply your home with electricity and provide hot water.

Supposing that your property is located in a region where steady winds are the norm, then you might want to consider using some wind turbines in conjunction with your solar power system. Between the two you should be able to generate enough electricity to supply your home.

Now you will also need to think how you are going to support yourself, if you are so far off the grid, that you have to quit your job to live there. This means often times developing new talents or ones that have been dormant for years.

For instance, if you grew up farming and have a knack for it, you could start an organic farm. This is a means of supporting yourself which fits well with living off the grid. Your home and your livelihood would both be environmentally friendly and sustainable.

You might be an artist that is planning to do their artwork and sell it. This is a great off the grid profession to do. Maybe you are a painter and can use the spaces around you for inspiration for your paintings. Being a writer can also be done off the grid and with today’s cell phones you can still easily stay in touch with the rest of the world without using too much power. Just be sure you have cell surface where you are going to live.

So does living off the grid appeal to you? Just remember that you will have to use conservation methods too along with the solar and/or wind energy to make it successfully. You cannot be an energy hog and live off the grid too.

by Dale Green

Many times when we think of wind energy, the first picture that surfaces is those large windmills out on farm land around the country. Have you ever wondered how they work? They really aren’t hard to understand, it’s just a few blades connected to a shaft that rotates and creates power. We make it sound easier then it is, but we’ll get into a little more detail in a minute.

Listen, the next time you see one of those old-fashioned airplanes with the front propeller, think about how those work. It’s the same type of concept that goes into wind turbines, except they are larger and more powerful. The most common type of wind energy producer is a windmill. However, once the electricity is generated, the terminology revolves around a wind power unit, WG, or WEC (wind energy converter).

Now that the world has turned our technology up a notch, there are strong and more efficient wind turbines out there today. Take for example the HAWT system. This is short for a horizontal-axis wind turbine. They offer a rotor shaft and generator in the same location at the top of the tower. Then of course there are servo motors that have built in sensors to help make the blades rotate faster.

To understand the complexity of this fully, the turbines must be positioned upwind in order to create a substantial amount of power. The good news is they are extremely durable, and specifically built to keep from collapsing. This is nice to know considering all the turbulence and strong winds that come through at these heights.

If the HAWT isn’t what you need, one of the VAWTS might be better for you. These are setup in a vertical position and much lower to the ground. While it’s a great benefit if you need to do maintenance or repairs, it hurts you in the long run. These don’t produce nearly as much energy as the HAWTS, but they are more convenient if that’s what you’re looking for when creating wind energy .

The reason these can’t be setup on the high towers is because they’re difficult to mount. This is why you normally see these at the base of the tower.

This provides you easy access to the mechanical part for maintenance or repair. But the downside is that since the speed of the wind is slower at this lower altitude, there is a lower amount of wind energy available to these turbines. Also because the winds closer to the surface can be more turbulent, these types of turbines can be vibrated more, and therefore get more wear and tear.

If you want to truly do your part and take advantage of a renewable resource, try combining it with solar power as well. It will allow you to reduce your energy costs, help keep the environment cleaner, and let everyone around you breathe cleaner air.

by Dale Green

We’ve been using wind energy in this world for hundreds of years. You’ve seen windmills in images from Holland, along farmlands in the United States, and various other parts of the world. They are used to help pump water, grind grain, and help the economy continue to grow. Unfortunately, it took a huge energy crisis for us to start taking notice of all the benefits.

Similar to windmills the wind turbine get attached to a tower, so it can capture the right amount of the wind’s energy. A good elevation for these turbines to be the most effective is about 100 feet or higher. This way they can draw energy from the fastest winds that are not as turbulent as they are on the surface.

Turbines with their blades that are similar to propellers catch the energy from the wind. There are normally about 2 to 3 blades attached to a shaft which in turns forms what is a called a rotor. The blades turning in the wind create lift and drag. Drag happens when the wind hits the front of the blade. Lift happens as a wind pocket occurs on the backside of the blade. By combing the two forces it makes the rotor turn similar to an airplane propeller. And the shaft is turning a generator and this is what creates electricity.

A wind turbine can be used by itself on a small scale. This type of wind turbine are usually used either for communication functions or for pumping water. But farmers, ranchers, and homeowners the reside in areas that have plenty of wind, can utilize the turbines for electricity there by lowering their power bills.

Now, if you need a larger application, then more than one turbine will need to be utilized. Normally these are just combined with solar power applications. You often see these as part of a utility grid power system or working together in a wind plant somewhere. While this may sound like a far way off, many power companies today are purchasing excess energy from their customers that use wind energy. So not only will they save money, but you will as well.

As the world continues to turn, the fossil fuels are being depleted at faster rates. It’s even more reason why you need to think about an alternative power source like wind energy. Outside of solar energy, this is the 2nd best option out there today. Granted, it won’t be for everyone, but if you’re interested in wind energy then you need to take the appropriate steps.

Wind energy is 100% renewable an causes no harm to the environment. This is the type of energy that you need to be using these days worldwide. You could ultimately save 100% on your energy costs, through using this power along with other forms of renewable energies. You will also being doing something good for your environment.

So do your part for the planet and take a deeper look into wind energy. Check the charts in your area to see if there is enough wind on a consistent basis. If everything is up to par, then start taking advantage of all the benefits. If you take this route then the only side effect you will see is happiness. We all have nagging irritations throughout the day and figure out ways to overcome them. Unfortunately, your dog doesn’t have the same luxury as you to apply lotion, creams, or anything else to help the skin. So do them a favor and start using natural dog shampoo. Let everyone else know too, because it’s something every dog owner should hear about before they wash their dogs

Have you always dreamed of being self sufficient, being able to live off the grid and supply your own energy? If you’re like most of us, you’ve at least thought about it before. It once was that just about the only way to do this was to live in an area so remote that no existing electrical grid would reach. Now, the choice to live off the gridis something which is available to an increasing number of people, most concerned more with saving on their electric bill than with living off the land. However, if you’ve found some remote property, you may have to learn to live off the grid out of necessity rather than choice.

If you’re building a new home on your property, then you should decide on what sort of power you want to use in your home before construction begins. Since you’re moving here to live off the grid, you should make your energy source part of your home from the ground up.

If you’d prefer to use solar power, you’ll have to make sure that the property receives plenty of full sun to ensure that you can produce enough energy to meet your needs. A solar power system generally performs best when it faces south. You’ll need to have some idea of how much power you need to produce; remember that you’ll need enough energy to power your home and heat your water as well.

If you happen to live in an area which gets a lot of wind, then you may be able to meet your energy needs by using wind turbines as well as solar power systems. Together, the two should be able to supply all of the power you’ll need.

One part of living off the grid is being able to support yourself. Chances are you can’t keep your current job, so you’ll need to either develop some marketable skills or use some skills you already have to make a living in your new home.

For example, if you were raised on a farm, you may be able to support yourself with a small organic farm. This is a lifestyle which meshes perfectly with the idea of living off the grid using only clean, sustainable energy sources.

If you’re a writer or an artist, then you may be able to continue your current line of work and live off the grid. You’ll have a peaceful place to create your work; and you can sell it online and keep in touch with the outside world via email and phone (make sure that the area has cell phone reception and that you can get on the web though).

Is living off the grid something you’d like to do? If you have a way to support yourself, you really can do this. Remember that being a heavy electricity user and life off the grid are not compatible. You’ll be responsible for meeting your own energy needs, so you’ll need to conserve power.

In order to get a grasp on the world’s energy crisis, you have to learn more about the renewable energysolution. To be honest, you won’t find a fast answer to this one thanks to its complexity. However, if we can just figure out a way to keep up with the technology we’re given, things would run a lot smoother.

Just think, according to experts, by the time we reach 2050 the energy usage will actually double what it is today. Unfortunately, we only have ourselves to blame thanks to the population growth in the world.

Even the countries that don’t utilize a substantial amount of energy are using technologies that need it. In the end it’s adding a lot more stress to the world.

India and China are two of the countries that are increasing their energy use today. There are many people in those countries just getting on an airplane for the first time, not to mention buying their first automobile or TV set. With this happening these countries are going to increase their demand for not only electricity, but also fuel for the cars and airplanes.

So now that you have a better understanding around today’s energy, it’s even more of a reason why renewable resources are more in need today. Obviously we’re still going to need coal and oil, but being able to get to them as our supply diminishes is becoming increasingly difficult.

While wind and solar energy are definitely our future, they aren’t necessarily a concrete answer. Can you believe that only 1% of the energy supply is used through these two options? The good news is experts are claiming that around the mid-21st century we should see that number increase to 30% or more. We just have to remember that turbines and solar energy systems will have to be installed and utilized appropriately.

Listen, we’re still going to need the fossil fuels out there in order to take advantage of the other energy that will still be needed. It’s important to understand it can’t just magically happen, and that it won’t happen quickly.

So for now we’ll just have to keep moving forward when it comes to wind and solar power. Eventually it could be used in every home out there, but for now just do what you can. In the end it’s going to cut down fossil fuels and give everyone a better understanding of how it can help each and every one of us.
